Obere Pfarre

Obere Pfarre is a Gothic parish church located on Kaulberg hill in Bamberg's old town, crowned by an 81-meter tower. The structure features characteristic pointed arches, soaring windows, and an ornate facade that exemplify the Gothic style and dominate the surrounding medieval streets.

Construction of the church began in 1338, with Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn consecrating it in 1387. The tower was later completed, and both elements have defined Bamberg's skyline ever since.

The church remains deeply rooted in the daily life of Bamberg's community, serving as a gathering place for the faithful and visitors alike. Regular services within its walls continue to shape both the religious and social rhythm of the city.

The entrance portal displays intricate stone carvings depicting wise and foolish virgins alongside Mary's coronation, created in the late 14th century. These decorative works showcase the skill of medieval stonemasons and reveal stories carved in stone that many visitors walk past without noticing.
