Castle Virnsberg

Castle Virnsberg stands on a slate hill encircled by the Nitzbach stream, featuring defensive walls, towers, and a prominent gatehouse with an ogival arch bridge.

Construction of Castle Virnsberg began in 1235, and the structure changed ownership multiple times until 1914 when a preservation society acquired the property to protect its remains.

The castle forms part of the architectural heritage monuments of Bavaria, representing medieval military and residential construction techniques of the Teutonic Order.

Visitors can examine the remaining fortifications, including the shield wall, inner bailey foundations, and historical residential structures within the castle grounds.

The castle's elliptical layout and steep hillside position created natural defenses, while its ogival arch bridge serves as the main entrance over the neck ditch.
