Schloss Wickrath, Moated castle in Mönchengladbach, Germany
Schloss Wickrath is a castle complex in Mönchengladbach surrounded by water and positioned along the Niers river. It features baroque west and east wings joined by a central courtyard, forming an integrated architectural ensemble.
The current castle was built between 1746 and 1772 under Count Wilhelm Otto Friedrich von Quadt's direction. This construction replaced an earlier structure and established the baroque style that defines the site today.
The name comes from the old Flemish word "Wyck," referring to a bay or indentation in the landscape. The castle remains a symbol of the region's noble heritage and continues to shape local identity.
The grounds are open during regular hours and host exhibitions throughout the year. Guided tours help visitors explore the main sections and understand the layout of the complex.
The Landstallmeisterhaus within the complex was the residence of the master overseeing the castle's horse breeding program. This specialized building reveals how carefully organized life was on a noble estate.
