Schlosskirche Meisenheim

Schlosskirche Meisenheim is a Gothic church building with a three-nave hall structure spanning five bays and featuring an intricate net-ribbed vaulting throughout. The choir follows an octagonal floor plan with seven sides and displays more complex vaulting than the main nave.

Construction began in 1479 under master builder Philipp von Gmünd following the destruction of an earlier church during bombardment in 1461. The rebuilding after this devastation made the structure a symbol of recovery in the region.

The church holds Renaissance tombstones of the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken family members buried here from the 15th to 17th centuries. These monuments reflect how central this place was to the local nobility and their power in the region.

The building underwent comprehensive renovation between 1962 and 1968 to restore many original Gothic features. When visiting, allow time to appreciate the detailed vaulting and stonework throughout the interior.

The choir is designed with an unusual octagonal floor plan resembling a central structure with seven sides. This rare configuration gives the choir its own distinct form, setting it apart from the rest of the building.
