Schloss Rethmar, Renaissance château in Sehnde, Germany
Schloss Rethmar is a three-winged manor house in Sehnde that combines baroque style with traditional German architectural features. The structure maintains its historical exterior while its side wings now serve as rental apartments.
The castle was originally founded in 1264 as a defensive fortress and underwent major transformation around 1700 into a baroque residence. This renovation shaped the appearance that survives to the present day.
The central staircase displays ancestral portraits from noble families who lived here across generations, telling their stories through the artwork on display.
The building is accessible from Gutsstraße in Sehnde, with the exterior structure visible for viewing from the surrounding grounds. Since it now serves partially as residential apartments, visiting works best for observing the outer facade and courtyard areas.
The castle settles roughly half a millimeter southward each year due to its marshy foundation, requiring door maintenance approximately every five years. This gradual movement is a rare architectural challenge the building faces beneath its stable appearance.
