Schloss Sachsenburg, Gothic castle in Frankenberg, Germany
Chateau de Sachsenburg is a Gothic castle perched on a rocky formation overlooking the Zschopau River. The building features pointed arches and vaulted ceilings, with a triangular courtyard that organizes the interior spaces.
Construction took place between 1480 and 1488 under Caspar von Schönberg on the ruins of an earlier fortress from the 13th century. This transformation from military stronghold to residential palace shows how the needs of noble estates changed during this period.
The castle shows how its owners adapted their way of living over time and reshaped the building. The rooms reflect how defense became less important and comfort became the main concern.
The building is currently undergoing renovation, but the hiking trails around the castle remain open to visitors. The surrounding area offers several routes to explore, and the landscape is easy to walk through.
This castle is one of the few completely preserved late Gothic residential palaces in Saxony, making it comparable to only a handful of similar structures from that era. This rarity makes it an important example of the region's architectural heritage.
