Schloss Scharfenberg is a medieval fortress in Klipphausen perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Elbe Valley near Meissen. The castle preserves its defensive walls and a distinctive round tower that define its visual character.
The castle first appeared in records in 1227 under the control of the bishops of Meissen. From 1403 onward, the von Miltitz family owned and managed the property until 1941.
The castle became a gathering place for creative thinkers in the 1800s who came to exchange ideas and discuss their work. This artistic heritage continues to shape how visitors perceive the space today as a center for intellectual life.
The castle operates as a hotel with rooms available for events and special occasions. Visitors should arrange in advance to participate in guided tours of the property.
A section of the castle served as a hidden pharmaceutical storage facility for civil defense during the Cold War era. This secret purpose remained unknown to many visitors for decades and reveals an unexpected modern use of the historic structure.
