Schloss Schönbichl, Schloss in Deutschland
Schloss Schönbichl is a three-story Baroque building in Kranzberg situated on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding landscape. Built around 1682, it features a central projection on its southern side, a sloped roof, and a roof rider that was reconstructed in the 1990s.
The castle was first mentioned in 1197 and served various noble families as a residence and administrative seat. Between 1650 and 1808 it formed the center of a noble estate, remaining under the ownership of the Freiherren von Barbier until 1814 before its role changed.
The castle is named after its location in the elevated settlement of Schönbichl and serves as a local landmark for residents. The small chapel on the ground floor remains in active use for services, connecting the building to the religious practices of the community.
The castle sits on elevated ground and is accessible from outside, though interior access is not available to visitors. Its location allows good views of the surrounding landscape and nearby villages from multiple vantage points.
The roof rider, which had vanished for centuries, was reconstructed in the 1990s, showing how local groups work to preserve the castle. Archaeological finds nearby suggest settlements from the Bronze Age and early La Tene period existed at this location long before the castle was built.
