The castle, built in the late 12th century under Erzbischof Rainald von Dassel, sustained substantial damage during the Pfälzischer Erbfolgekrieg military campaign of 1689.
The structure exhibits architectural elements from different periods, combining Romanesque foundations with Gothic and Renaissance modifications added during the 15th century.
The upper floors of Stadtburg Andernach currently serve as a venue for wedding ceremonies, continuing a tradition that began in 2006.
The castle's design allowed the Kurfürst of Cologne to maintain direct control over Andernach's citizens through its strategic position within the city walls.
