Stadtkirche Rotenburg, Lutheran church in Rotenburg an der Wümme, Germany
The Stadtkirche Rotenburg is a Protestant church with a fieldstone bell tower on the west side from the 18th century and a red brick nave in neo-Gothic style from the 1860s. The interior is rectangular with galleries supported by cast-iron columns and holds roughly 800 seats.
The current building was constructed between 1860 and 1862 to replace an earlier church as the town expanded and required larger capacity. The bell tower on the west side dates to 1752 and was retained as a link to the older church tradition.
The building shapes the town's visual identity with its distinctive red brick form and serves as a gathering place for regular worship. The spacious interior with its supporting columns creates an open, welcoming feeling that encourages community participation.
The church is open during regular worship services, allowing visitors to experience the interior and its organ. For visits outside of scheduled services, it is best to check ahead or contact the congregation about access.
The bell tower contains the Margaretha bell from the 14th century alongside newer bells from 1955 and 2006, creating an acoustic blend that spans nearly 700 years. This combination of different periods in the bell ensemble is notable for its historical continuity.
