Thüringer Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden

The Thüringer Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden is an open-air museum preserving rural architecture from the region with over 35 historical buildings on its grounds. These include farmhouses, barns, workshops, bee houses, dove towers, and other specialized structures that show how different rural activities took place.

The museum was founded to preserve traditional buildings, some dating back to the 16th century. One house from 1550 ranks among Thuringia's oldest surviving rural structures and has endured multiple conflicts over time.

The buildings reveal how people in Thuringia lived and worked in daily life. You see old tools, furniture, and objects that bring the past into focus and help you understand the rhythms of rural communities.

The grounds cover a large area and need time to explore, so plan for several hours of walking. The paths are generally easy to navigate, but sturdy shoes are recommended, especially during wet weather.

The museum houses the oldest post mill in Thuringia, a working windmill that demonstrates crafting techniques from earlier times. This specialized building is often overlooked but brings the region's milling traditions to life.
