Tister Bauernmoor, Nature reserve in Stemmen, Germany
Tister Bauernmoor is a nature reserve spanning approximately 570 hectares of raised bog in the Lüneburg Heath, characterized by waterlogged terrain and specialized plant life. The landscape appears open and expansive, crossed by water channels and boggy ground that define its appearance.
The raised bog formed after the last Ice Age and was later utilized by people extracting peat for fuel. This extraction work shaped the current landscape and contributed to the distinctive moorland features visible today.
Local residents contribute to environmental research through documentation of flora, fauna, and geological features within the protected moorland ecosystem.
Visitors can explore the area on foot via pathways and enjoy views from an observation platform overlooking the moorland. A former peat railway offers another way to experience the reserve on guided tours.
The reserve attracts thousands of cranes annually that rest here before continuing their journey southward. This bird migration route makes the site an important stopover for long journeys across continents.
