Walkemühle, Restaurant in Frankenberg an der Eder , ehemalige Walkemühle
The Walkemühle is a small water mill in Frankenberg with a traditional half-timbered building whose wooden beams are visible in the walls. Located along a popular walking and cycling route on the Ederauenradweg, it now houses a restaurant and cafe.
The mill was first mentioned in records over 660 years ago, in 1358, and served as a workplace for cloth makers. In the Middle Ages, it was a center of the fulling process that processed and strengthened woolen fabrics.
The mill takes its name from its original purpose: it was a fulling mill where cloth makers processed their fabrics. The old half-timbered building still shows the craftsmanship of this tradition and invites visitors to experience a workplace from centuries past.
The building is now accessible as a restaurant and cafe with seating both indoors and outside in the beer garden. Visitors can easily reach it on foot or by bicycle from the walking trail and will find a playground and event hall nearby.
The water wheel beneath the building is still functional and generates electricity at night when illuminated. This blend of historical mechanics and modern energy generation shows how old technology can still be used practically today.
