General von Stein Barracks, Military barracks in Freising, Germany.
General von Stein Barracks is a military installation containing multiple structures spread across the northern part of Freising near Munich. The compound was designed as a unified complex for housing and military training purposes.
The installation was built between 1936 and 1937 for the Wehrmacht Artillery Regiment 7. It later served the United States Air Force and German military units before closing as a military site in 2004.
The site is named after General Hermann Freiherr von Stein, a German military officer from the First World War era. This naming choice reflects the military heritage that shaped the place and remains part of the local identity.
Following its closure in 2004, the site was converted into the Steinpark residential neighborhood, with the main headquarters building preserved. The building now serves educational purposes and provides insight into the location's past.
An air defense missile unit was stationed here from 1963 to 1992, representing a significant presence during the Cold War era. This transformation from a weapons-based installation to a residential area marks an unusual shift in purpose.
