Wörth

Wörth is an island in Staffelsee lake in Upper Bavaria that rises approximately 678 meters above sea level and is surrounded by water. The island connects to surrounding areas through hiking trails and serves as a destination for outdoor activities.

Archaeological excavations between 1992 and 1997 uncovered a cemetery with 363 burials dating from the late 17th to 18th centuries. The remains reveal evidence of settlement and burial practices during a period of significant change in the region.

The cemetery reflects the strong Catholic faith of the local population through religious objects like rosaries and saint medallions that were placed with the burials. These findings reveal the spiritual practices and personal devotion of the people who lived in this region centuries ago.

The island is best reached on foot or during water activities from the nearby town of Seehausen am Staffelsee. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven terrain when exploring the area.

Excavations revealed rare death crowns made from copper and silver wire that show how creatively people adorned their deceased. Such intricate wire work is uncommon in archaeological findings and suggests skilled craftsmanship and local customs.
