Neues Haus, Architectural heritage monument in Mitte, Hannover, Germany.
The Neues Haus is a building in Hannover's city center with characteristic arched walkways and symmetrical facades from the 18th century. The arcades span the ground floor and connect both sides through covered passages that invite strolling.
The building was constructed in 1712 as a plague house outside Hannover and later served as a restaurant. After World War II it found a new purpose as part of the Music School, undergoing restoration to recover earlier forms.
The name 'New House' reflects how residents once viewed this building when it first stood outside the city center as a fresh structure. Today the ground-floor arcades host shops and cafes that keep the space active and integrated into daily city life.
The building sits centrally in Hannover and is easily reached by public transportation. Access to the arcades is open at all times since they function as public passages.
The arcades were rebuilt in their historical form in 1972 after war damage, showing how such passages once functioned. These reconstructed arches today offer a rare glimpse of how the city looked before World War II.
