Altlacher Hoch-Kopf, Mountain summit in Bavarian Alps, Germany.

The Altlacher Hochkopf is a mountain summit in the Bavarian Pre-Alps standing at approximately 1328 meters. The area features mixed forests and is crisscrossed by marked hiking trails offering views of the nearby Lake Walchensee.

A hunting lodge was constructed beneath the summit in 1850 and later became a retreat for King Ludwig II. This early royal connection shaped the site's importance in regional history.

The mountain holds a connection to German classical music through composer Richard Wagner, who worked on sections of his opera Siegfried at the lodge. Visitors can sense this artistic heritage while exploring the historic hut and the setting that inspired such significant works.

The ascent begins at the southern shore of Lake Walchensee and takes about 1.5 hours along a marked trail. The route is well-signposted and passes through forest, so sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are important.

The historic alpine hut sits at approximately 1299 meters and remains hidden from the general public as it is reserved for German Alpine Club members only. This exclusivity protects the site from overcrowding and gives it a quiet, intimate character within the mountain landscape.
