Bayernturm, Observation tower in Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke, Germany

Bayernturm is a 38-meter steel tower in Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke with a large observation platform accessible by 180 steps. The platform provides sweeping views across multiple German regions and the historic sites scattered throughout the surrounding landscape.

Built in 1966, the structure served as a viewpoint over the former border between East and West Germany, allowing visitors to observe border installations during the Cold War division. It stands today as a witness to that period of separation and controlled territory.

The tower's name reflects its symbolic connection to Bavaria, and it stands in a historically significant border region that visitors experience as a place of remembrance. From this vantage point, nearby castles and fortified churches form a visible cultural landscape that shaped the area's identity.

Entry to the platform requires coins at the entrance, so bring small change with you. You can reach the tower by car via Turmstrasse from the main road, with parking available right near the structure.

From the platform, five notable fortified structures come into view: Veste Coburg, Veste Heldburg, Straufhain, Blessberg, and Dolmar near Meiningen. These visible landmarks mark the key high points across the region and help orient visitors within the landscape.
