Warturm und Storchnest
Warturm und Storchnest, Protected cultural heritage tower in Woltmershausen, Germany
The Warturm und Storchnest is a two-story building with a steep gabled roof standing along the Weser in Woltmershausen. Inscriptions from 1577 mark the main facade, and the structure now houses a restaurant operating within its historic walls.
The structure was built in 1309 as part of Bremen's defense network and served as a fortification point along the Weser for centuries. It was destroyed during the battles for the city in 1813 but was later reconstructed and repurposed.
The tower has served as a landmark for this river area for centuries and takes its name from its role as a watch post in earlier times. Today people use the building as a restaurant and gathering place, giving it a fresh purpose in the local community.
The location sits at Warturmer Heerstraße 153 and is easy to spot from the river side. Visitors can stop by the restaurant inside or view the old building from outside, where it stands out clearly from the surrounding modern area.
The building's name reflects an unusual feature: the structures on top once served as nesting grounds for storks over many years. This rare blend of medieval defense architecture and bird habitat makes the place something special along the river.
