Schloss Tonna, Medieval water castle in Gräfentonna, Germany

The four-wing core castle forms a rectangle of 62 by 42 meters, surrounded by a water-filled moat within a 12,000 square meter area.

From 1861 to 1991, the castle served as a prison facility, with modifications in 1873 adding a third floor to create 282 individual cells.

The Renaissance-style east wing features a courtyard-facing oriel window, representing architectural elements from different construction periods of the castle.

Since 2013, the empty castle requires extensive renovation work, with a support association founded in 2020 to research its history and preserve the monument.

During World War II, the prison held at least 144 foreign forced laborers, reaching its peak occupancy between 1933 and 1935 with 85 men and 35 women.
