Tomateninseln, River beach islands in Au am Rhein, Germany.
Tomateninseln are three artificial islands situated on the Rhine River near Au am Rhein between kilometers 349 and 350. These islands were naturally formed during river regulation and were later transformed into important protected breeding grounds.
The islands formed in 1907 as a result of Rhine regulation when groin construction naturally led to island formation at the river bend. These engineering works fundamentally transformed the river landscape and created new habitats.
The name comes from a local story about Dutch sailors discarding spoiled tomatoes upstream before reaching Basel, which eventually led to tomato plants growing spontaneously on the islands. This tale reflects how closely tied the islands are to the river's history of human commerce and movement.
The islands have limited public access since they are strictly protected as a bird sanctuary, but they can be viewed from nearby riverside areas or from a river cruise. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best chance to observe bird activity.
Tomato seeds reach the islands through wastewater systems since they survive human digestion intact, leading to spontaneous tomato growth on the islands and riverbanks. This accidental farming phenomenon makes these protected areas an unusual meeting point between human waste and nature.
