Staustufe Drakenburg, Lock and barrage on Weser River in Drakenburg, Germany
Staustufe Drakenburg is a water control complex with a lock, weir, and integrated hydroelectric plant on the Weser River. The lock allows large vessels to pass through level changes while the weir controls water levels for navigation and power generation.
The structure was built between 1953 and 1956 to improve navigation on the Weser and maintain stable water levels. It was part of a larger plan to develop the river for modern cargo transport.
The facility remains central to river transportation on the Weser and shows how closely water management and local infrastructure are connected to each other.
The site is visible from roadside areas and can be observed by foot from various viewpoints. Best explored from the adjacent paths that offer views of the entire system from different angles.
The facility is fully operated by remote control from another power station, representing one of the earliest applications of remote control in water management. This system allows multiple facilities along the Weser to be managed in coordination.
