Gedenkstätte Bautzen, Cultural heritage monument and memorial museum in Bautzen, Germany.
Gedenkstätte Bautzen is a former prison that now displays exhibitions about inmates and conditions during different German political periods. The site includes the original prison buildings with preserved cell blocks that show how people were forced to live.
The prison was built in 1902 and later served as a place of political confinement during Nazi rule, Soviet occupation, and under the Stasi. Each period left its mark on the buildings and shows how imprisonment reasons and conditions changed over time.
The exhibitions present personal stories of those imprisoned here and how political persecution shaped their lives. Visitors learn about daily conditions in the cells and the hopes that prisoners held despite difficult circumstances.
The site is easy to reach on foot and exhibitions are well marked inside buildings, so visitors can explore independently or join guided tours. There are outdoor seating areas for breaks and an information desk with materials in several languages.
Two authentic prisoner transport vehicles are displayed on the grounds and show the type of vehicles used to move detainees. These rare vehicles make the reality of transport tangible and give visitors a direct sense of this experience.
