St. Maria Himmelfahrt

St. Maria Himmelfahrt is a parish church in Herxheim bei Landau/Pfalz combining a Gothic choir with net ceiling, a brick bell tower from 1585, and late Baroque main structure. The interior was modified in 1833 to improve its layout and now displays an architectural composition spanning several periods.

The site originated around 773 AD with a small chapel, while construction of the current building started in 1507 and continued until 1777. This extended building phase reveals how the place developed over centuries with successive architectural layers.

The high altar created in 1950 displays a silver tabernacle and side panels showing Mary's Assumption with scenes from her life. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the community's devotion to Mary.

The interior layout is easy to navigate with clear sightlines to the choir and altar from different seating areas. The doorways and aisles are adequately sized for comfortable movement, allowing visitors to explore the space freely.

The building houses a six-bell carillon from 1952 bearing inscriptions that express reverence and hope for peace. These bells continue to define the soundscape of the community and reflect values rebuilt after wartime.
