Dingdener Heide, Protected area in Hamminkeln, Germany
Dingdener Heide is a protected area of 212 hectares combining wetlands, meadows, pine forests, and deciduous woodlands between Münsterland and the Lower Rhine region. The site brings together different landscape types with pathways for walking and cycling.
A major fire swept through the area in the early 1920s, after which local farmers began working the land. Intensive agricultural use during the 1970s brought further changes to how the landscape developed.
The place shows how people have shaped the land over centuries, with information panels and observation points offering insights into local wildlife. Visitors can learn at these stations about the plants and animals that live here today.
The area is accessible from parking areas near Klausenhof Academy and Bokern Forest Cemetery. The marked paths make it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.
One fifth of all documented flowering plants in this protected area are listed as endangered species in North Rhine-Westphalia. This high concentration of rare plant species makes the area particularly valuable to conservationists.
