Fenster des Himmels / Irrstern, Cautionary monument in Osterholz, Germany.
Fenster des Himmels consists of two connected parts: a video installation in the main building foyer and a three-meter-wide granite plate with steel elements in the clinic park. The site sits within the Bremen-Ost Hospital grounds and is surrounded by maintained green space.
Between 1938 and 1944, nearly 1,000 patients from Bremen Mental Hospital were transferred to other facilities, with over 700 perishing. These transfers were part of the Nazi T-4 program targeting people with mental illnesses.
The video installation displays faces and clasped hands of victims in an endless loop on two side-by-side screens. This presentation allows visitors to pause and reflect on each person, reconnecting humanity to individual stories.
The site is located on the Bremen-Ost Hospital grounds and remains accessible to visitors interested in spending time with the installation. It is advisable to exercise caution during wet or snowy conditions, as the grass areas can become slippery.
The name Irrstern, engraved on the granite plate, draws from poet Friedrich Hölderlin, who himself struggled with mental health challenges. This choice connects the memorial to a literary voice that understood human suffering from personal experience.
