Siedlung Elsengrund, Architectural ensemble in Treptow-Köpenick, Germany.
The Siedlung Elsengrund is a residential complex with multiple two-story family houses featuring hip roofs and characteristic Berlin beaver tail roof tiles. The houses are arranged within a triangle formed by Essenplatz, Wolfsgartenstraße, and Janitzkystraße.
Architect Otto Rudolf Salvisberg designed and supervised construction of the houses between 1919 and 1921. This residential project emerged in the years following World War I and reflects the architectural ideals of that postwar period.
Street names throughout the neighborhood commemorate victims of the Köpenick Week of Blood, with memorial plaques telling these stories at many corners. Visitors and residents encounter this remembrance culture naturally while walking through the area.
The site is best explored on foot, which allows you to notice details of individual houses and the street layout properly. Several small parks and public pathways provide good views of the entire ensemble.
The houses range from 61 to 116 square meters with cellars and heated attic rooms, which was typical for living spaces of that era. These compact yet thoughtfully designed floor plans reveal the practical domestic life of postwar residents.
