Heilig Geist, Aachen, Gothic church in Aachen, Germany.
Heilig Geist is a church building in Aachen with white plastered exterior surfaces and a square bell tower positioned in front of the main nave. The structure features staggered cubic forms and internal buttressing that shape its overall appearance.
The church emerged from an architectural competition with 71 participants in 1928, won by Otto Bongartz. Its opening in 1930 marked a shift toward modern design in religious buildings.
Stained glass windows cast colored light throughout the interior, creating a reflective environment for prayer and contemplation. These glass surfaces shape how people experience the space during worship and quiet moments.
Access is through a broad flight of steps on the northeast side of the building at Kornerstrasse 20-22. Take your time exploring the interior, as the open layout makes it easy to move through the space.
The building uses reinforced concrete to create a support-free interior space, which was unusual for church buildings of that era. This construction approach allowed unobstructed sightlines throughout the worship area.
