Windmühle Charlotte

Windmühle Charlotte stands at the entrance of Geltinger Birk nature reserve with traditional Dutch architectural design and a wind rose mechanism for operation. The structure was engineered with advanced water management systems integrated into its design.

Built in 1826 by Rittmeister von Hobe, the mill served as both a grain mill and water drainage system for the surrounding land. It became an important engineering structure of the region in the 19th century.

The mill honors Charlotte von Plessen, a former Duchess of Mecklenburg who passed away at Gelting Castle in 1822. It serves as a visible landmark for visitors exploring the surrounding nature reserve and landscape.

The structure is now a private holiday residence, so visitors can mainly observe the exterior architecture while exploring the surrounding nature reserve. The best access is via walking trails through Geltinger Birk, where you can view the structure from different angles.

The structure used an Archimedes screw mechanism to lift water to higher elevations, which was crucial for draining the marsh landscapes of this region. Later, an electric motor supplemented this hydraulic system to ensure continuous operation.
