Flugplatz Nellingen

Flugplatz Nellingen was a military airfield on a large property with hangars and runways located southeast of Stuttgart. The grounds contained buildings for aircraft maintenance and storage along with residential quarters for personnel.

The facility began construction in 1932 as a planned civilian airport but quickly transformed into a military airfield in the years that followed. It then served as an important base for aircraft operations and various technical development projects.

The base was embedded in the local area where soldiers and residents lived nearby and saw each other regularly. It represented a period when military presence was woven into daily life for families in the surrounding towns.

The site is partly accessible to visitors today, though many buildings remain restricted and viewing is limited to the outer areas. The terrain is quite open and exposed, so visitors should come prepared for changing weather and wind.

A section of the airfield housed a research institute that worked on advanced technologies that changed understanding in aviation and other fields. This institute brought together scientists working on concepts that were revolutionary for their time.
