Neues Schloss Freyenstein

Neues Schloss Freyenstein is a three-winged Renaissance building with a prominent staircase tower and decorative terracotta elements on the facade. The structure displays typical Renaissance architecture with handcrafted details that remain visible today.

Construction began in 1556 under architect Dominicus Parr for the noble Conrad von Rohr. The castle emerged during a period when Renaissance architecture was introducing new forms to northern Germany.

The medallion portraits on the outer walls show important figures from the time the castle was built. Visitors can still see today the skilled stonework in these carvings, which reflected the builder's status and power.

The castle is accessible only through guided tours that include audio guides and models showing how it originally looked. Check opening times beforehand and wear comfortable shoes, as exploring involves walking through several rooms and outdoor areas.

The castle began as a noble residence but later became a brewery, school, and textile factory. This varied history shows how buildings adapted to changing needs in society over the centuries.
