Steingutfabrik Torgau, Ceramics factory in Torgau, Germany
The Steingutfabrik Torgau is a ceramics factory in the town that operates as a modern production center for Villeroy & Boch, manufacturing porcelain tableware through pressure casting techniques. The works feature specialized manufacturing equipment designed to maintain high craftsmanship standards in production.
The works was founded in 1886 and became part of Villeroy & Boch in 1925 before being nationalized in 1948 as VEB Steingutwerk under East German administration. The facility experienced major shifts in its operational structure following the end of World War II.
The factory earned multiple Design awards during the East German period for its tableware collections, including the distinctive Poldi stoneware service. These recognitions show how the works maintained quality standards even under state administration.
The factory site employs around 160 workers and remains one of only two Villeroy & Boch production facilities still operating in Germany. Visitors should note that this is an active working factory and visits should be planned at appropriate times.
Between August 1945 and January 1946, Soviet authorities dismantled three-quarters of the factory equipment and transported it to the Soviet Union. This loss was a pivotal moment in the works' history, as it had to be completely rebuilt afterward.
