Eisenmühle Oderwitz is a technology museum and historic watermill in Elstertrebnitz, set along the Profen Elster mill canal. The grounds hold several buildings that house machinery and equipment from different phases of industrial use.
Clemens Kunze, from the Erzgebirge region, founded the site in 1915 as an iron powder production facility. The same production method continued without major change until operations stopped in 1993.
Among the exhibits are mechanical musical instruments, including trumpets and barrel organs, that show how sound was produced without electricity. Walking through the collection gives a clear sense of how much craft went into building these devices.
The site has two residential buildings, with the older one used as a country guesthouse where visitors can stay overnight. The owners live on the property, so planning ahead before visiting is a good idea.
The museum shows the full process of making iron powder by rubbing iron rods together, a method no longer used in modern industry. This site is one of the few places where that process can still be followed from start to finish.
