Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport, International airport in Ambouli, Djibouti
Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport is an international aviation hub with a 3,150-meter (10,335-foot) asphalt runway and a terminal building for departures and arrivals about 6 kilometers (4 miles) from downtown. The facilities include check-in counters, baggage handling, and services for both passenger and cargo operations.
The airport was built in 1948 with a hard runway and terminal building, initially serving as Air Base 188 in the region. Major renovations followed after independence in the 1970s to expand and modernize the facility.
The airport links travelers from across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, making it a crossroads where people from different regions connect daily through flights and cargo services.
Travelers can reach the airport from downtown via taxi or shuttle service, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. The terminal is straightforward in layout, making navigation simple for both arrivals and departures.
The airport hosts military bases from France, the United States, Japan, and Italy, which account for a significant portion of daily operations. This international military presence shapes much of what happens at the facility beyond commercial flights.
