Church of Our Saviour, Baroque church in Christianshavn, Denmark.
The Church of Our Saviour is a baroque structure in Christianshavn featuring a 90-meter tower with an external spiral staircase wrapping around its exterior. The tower culminates in a gilded globe topped by a figure of Christ.
Construction started in 1682 under architect Lambert van Haven, with the building consecrated in 1696. The distinctive spiral spire was not completed until 1752.
The church serves as a spiritual gathering place where locals and visitors come to experience baroque religious architecture firsthand. Its presence shapes how people navigate and understand the surrounding neighborhood through its prominent visual landmark.
Visitors must climb 400 steps to reach the tower summit, with the final 150 steps on the external spiral staircase at heights up to 86 meters. The visit is best enjoyed on clear days when views from the top are unobstructed.
The interior contains 40 elephant symbols connected to Denmark's monarchy and the Order of the Elephant. These decorations remind visitors of the order's historical importance in Danish society.
