Nissum Fjord, Wetland sanctuary in Lemvig Municipality, Denmark
Nissum Fjord is an expansive brackish water system comprising three connected basins that form approximately 6,500 hectares of shallow, productive waters. Its form emerges from gentle shorelines and numerous small islands that divide the water into distinct zones.
The meadows surrounding the fjord have long supported livestock farming, generating wealth for the construction of several manor houses in the region. This connection between agricultural productivity and local wealth-building shaped the area's development.
Seven small harbors around the fjord maintain traditional fishing practices passed down through generations. Visitors can observe fishers at work and see how daily life continues along these quiet shores.
A network of walking trails encircles the fjord, connecting various viewpoints equipped with information panels and drinking water access. The trails allow visitors to explore the landscape at their own pace while observing the wide variety of bird life.
During spring and autumn, more than 20,000 migratory birds pass through the area, including endangered species such as Baltic Dunlin and Ruff. These seasons transform the fjord into an exceptionally active experience for birdwatchers from around the world.
