Bølgen, Residential building in Vejle, Denmark.
Bølgen is a residential complex made up of five wave-shaped building sections that step up nine floors along Vejle Inlet. The 105 apartments throughout the site each have different floor plans that respond to the curved architecture, with elevated balconies overlooking the harbor.
The complex was built in stages starting in 2009 with the first two waves, but paused during the financial crisis before completing the final three sections in 2018. This phased development shaped how the waterfront district developed over time.
The name refers to the water that surrounds the site, reflecting how residents connect with the harbor in their daily lives. The elevated balconies serve as extensions of living spaces where people naturally gather to experience the waterfront.
The site is easily walkable with direct access to the public harbor promenade, which has walking paths and seating areas. Being waterfront makes the location open and breezy, especially on windy days.
No two apartments share the same floor plan because each had to be fitted into the wave-like stepped form of the building. This makes the space highly individual for each resident.
