Vejle Fjord Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Vejle, Denmark
The Vejle Fjord Bridge is a reinforced concrete cantilever road bridge spanning 1712 meters across the water with 15 spans. The structure measures about 28 meters wide and has a central section of about 110 meters, allowing large ships to pass beneath.
Construction began in 1975 to address traffic congestion in Vejle, with the bridge officially opening in 1980. The project was essential to improve connections between the northern and southern regions.
The bridge design reflects Danish architectural preferences of the 1970s, incorporating neutral elements that complement the surrounding fjord and forest landscape.
The bridge carries the European route E45 and handles about 50,000 vehicles daily. Visitors can walk or drive across and enjoy open views over the fjord and surrounding landscape from the structure.
The bridge sits at least 40 meters above water level to allow large vessels to pass safely underneath. This design detail shows how planners had to balance both water and road traffic.
