Statens Museum for Kunst

Statens Museum for Kunst is an art museum in the Municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark, presenting paintings, sculptures and graphic works from multiple centuries. The collection extends across galleries in the historic building and an adjoining modern wing.

Vilhelm Dahlerup designed the museum building in Renaissance Revival style, which opened its doors in 1896. A modern extension with a glass connection was added in the late 1990s.

The name translates to "State Museum for Art" in Danish, reflecting its role as the country's main repository for national and international painting and sculpture. Visitors today move through rooms dedicated to golden age Danish masters and modern European movements, experiencing how Danish collectors approached art from across centuries.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday, with longer hours on Wednesdays extending into the evening. Rooms are spread across two building sections connected by a covered walkway.

A graphic collection spanning five centuries can be viewed in a study room by appointment. This royal collection includes prints and drawings not otherwise on permanent display.
