Thurø, Danish island in South Funen Archipelago, Denmark.
Thurø is an island in the South Funen Archipelago, connected to the mainland by a short bridge in Svendborg Municipality, Denmark. The terrain is mostly flat, with small bays, sandy beaches, and wetland areas along the coastline.
Thurø has been part of the South Funen island group for centuries, shaped by farming and fishing along its shores. In 2024, the wider region was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, drawing attention to its geological character.
Thurø has a long connection to sailing, and several well-known Danish sailors have come from the island. The small harbor still sees regular boat traffic, and the maritime way of life remains visible in the everyday rhythm of the place.
The island is easy to reach from Svendborg on foot, by bike, or by car thanks to the bridge connection. The flat coastal paths work well for walking or cycling, and most routes can be followed without any special equipment.
The wetlands around Thurø have been internationally recognized under the Ramsar Convention since 1977, making this one of the earliest protected sites of its kind in Denmark. That protection came nearly 50 years before the UNESCO Geopark designation.
