Established in 1760 outside Copenhagen's walls, the cemetery initially served as a burial ground for the poor before becoming a prestigious resting place.
The grounds contain the graves of writer Hans Christian Andersen, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, and physicist Niels Bohr among other Danish figures.
The cemetery opens from 7:00 to 22:00 between April and September, and from 7:00 to 19:00 from October through March.
The cemetery functions both as an active burial ground and a public green space where residents gather for recreation and leisure activities.
