Assistens Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Nørrebro, Denmark

The cemetery spans across gardens, meadows, and wooded areas with thousands of gravestones marking the resting places of notable Danish individuals.

Established in 1760 outside Copenhagen's walls, the cemetery initially served as a burial ground for the poor before becoming a prestigious resting place.

The grounds contain the graves of writer Hans Christian Andersen, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, and physicist Niels Bohr among other Danish figures.

The cemetery opens from 7:00 to 22:00 between April and September, and from 7:00 to 19:00 from October through March.

The cemetery functions both as an active burial ground and a public green space where residents gather for recreation and leisure activities.
