The Lakes, Copenhagen

Three rectangular lakes, Sankt Jørgens Sø, Peblinge Sø, and Sortedams Sø, form a curved chain around the western edge of Copenhagen's city center.

The lakes originated from a medieval stream, transformed into reservoirs through dam construction in the 1500s to power watermills and strengthen city defenses.

The lakes function as a central gathering space where residents participate in outdoor activities throughout the seasons, from summer picnics to winter skating.

A 6.35-kilometer path system encircles the three lakes, connecting multiple neighborhoods and providing routes for walking, running, and cycling activities.

Sortedams Sø contains two small islands, Fiskeøen and Fugleøen, which serve as protected nesting areas for local bird populations.
