Århus State and University Library, National and academic library in Aarhus, Denmark
The Århus State and University Library is a national academic library located in Aarhus inside a 14-story building called Bogtårnet. The building houses millions of physical materials and digital resources available to researchers and students for study and information retrieval.
The library was founded in 1897 and opened to the public in 1902, beginning with 100,000 books donated from the Danish Royal Library. Over the decades, it evolved into a major repository supporting research and knowledge preservation across Denmark.
The library maintains historical collections of Danish newspapers, advertisements, and recordings that reflect how media and public communication evolved. Walking through the collection rooms, you can sense the importance placed on preserving how people informed themselves and communicated over generations.
Inside, visitors find study spaces, group rooms, and workstations designed for learning and research. Staff members offer guidance and support to help you navigate the large collection and locate what you need.
The building earned its distinctive tower name from its tall vertical form and operates as a central distribution hub for loan exchanges among Danish public libraries. Many visitors are unaware that much of what they access here supports broader library networks across the country.
