Baron Boltens Gård, Historic mansion in central Copenhagen, Denmark
Baron Boltens Gård is a multi-building complex in central Copenhagen that stretches between Gothersgade and Store Kongensgade through a passage connecting its sections. The main house stands three stories tall with smooth masonry walls and a ground floor of plastered stonework, while a half-timbered warehouse occupies the second courtyard.
Wine merchant Henrik Bolten constructed the main house in 1771 and received a baronial title in 1783, marking his rise in social standing. The site itself had earlier served as an international trade center before being redeveloped into its current residential and commercial complex.
The property once served as an international trade center where merchants and citizens gathered throughout the 18th century. This mercantile past still shapes how people experience and use the space today.
The estate sits in downtown Copenhagen on Gothersgade, easily accessible on foot and recognizable by its substantial size along the street. A passage running through the complex connects two major roads and allows visitors to approach from different directions.
Since 1991, a section of the complex has functioned as a contemporary art gallery founded by Patricia and Jacob Asbæk within the historic walls. This transformation of a merchant's house into a modern art space reveals how historical buildings can take on entirely new purposes.
