Bornholm Butterfly Park, Butterfly zoo in Nexø, Denmark
Bornholm Butterfly Park is a butterfly zoo housed in a converted greenhouse on the western edge of Nexø that contains over one thousand butterflies from species around the world. The space displays them among plants and flowers that attract and support the insects in their daily activities.
The park was established in 1997 and transformed a former plant nursery into Denmark's dedicated space for butterfly observation. This was an early project of its kind to make exotic insects accessible to the public in Northern Europe.
The park contributes to public education through detailed presentations of butterfly life cycles, from eggs to caterpillars and chrysalises to adult specimens.
The park is open daily from May through mid-September and is located near the town center of Nexø on Bornholm. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the paths inside the greenhouse can be uneven and the humidity is quite high.
The greenhouse also houses a tropical lake with Japanese carp and free-flying parrots that flutter between the trees. This unexpected mix of different animal species creates a lively inner world beyond just the butterflies.
