Rokkestenen, Glacial erratic in Paradisbakkerne, Denmark
Rokkestenen is a massive boulder weighing about 35 tons that sits in the hilly landscape of Paradisbakkerne on Bornholm island. The stone rests on a thin base, which allows it to rock slightly when pressure is applied at the right points.
The stone was transported by glaciers over vast distances during the last ice age and deposited in the Baltic region. Its journey ended on Bornholm, where it became one of the most striking examples of glacial erratics in the area.
The stone features in local stories about supernatural properties and draws visitors eager to test the old legends themselves. Many people try to make the stone rock, giving the site an interactive quality that connects past beliefs with present-day visits.
A marked walking trail of about one kilometer leads from the parking area at Lisegårdsvejen to the stone. The path is well signposted and relatively easy to follow, even though the terrain is uneven in places.
This boulder is part of a collection of around 175 erratics on Bornholm, but none is as well known or easy to find as this one. The fact that it rocks makes it a place where visitors can experience basic physics firsthand.
