Svanemøllen, Wooden smock mill in Svaneke, Denmark
The octagonal windmill structure rises above the landscape with oak shingles covering its exterior and an ogee cap at its peak point.
Ten citizens from Svaneke and Ibsker formed an association in 1855 to build this mill, which began operations in 1857 with five grain grinders.
The windmill represents the agricultural traditions of Bornholm Island, where up to thirty wooden smock mills once operated throughout the region.
After serving as a grain mill until the 1950s, the structure gained protection status in 1960 and underwent renovations including shingle replacement.
During World War I, the mill provided electrical power to Svaneke through an engine installed in a small northwestern shed.
