Bülows kaserne, Military building in Fredericia, Denmark
Bülows Kaserne is a military barracks complex in Fredericia built during the 1930s with straightforward lines and functional design. The buildings display typical architecture of that era with clean geometric forms and practical layouts.
The complex was built between 1934 and 1940, replacing the older Østervold Kaserne dating from 1860. During World War II it came under the control of foreign forces occupying the country.
The complex bears the name of a Danish military officer and reflects Fredericia's role as a garrison town. You can see today how the buildings were designed to organize military life.
Visitors should know the site was decommissioned in 2014 and the municipality has been converting it for public use since then. It helps to check beforehand which areas are open or whether guided tours are available.
An exercise house within the complex dates back to 1863 and predates the main buildings by several decades. This older structure offers a window into how military training was conducted during the 1800s.
