Fotografisk Center, Photography gallery in Kødbyen, Denmark
Fotografisk Center is an art gallery in Copenhagen's Meatpacking District, housed in a brick building with industrial windows behind Øksnehallen. Inside, movable exhibition walls and restored timber ceilings allow the space to be rearranged for each show.
The center opened in 1996 on Gammel Strand, then moved to Amaliegade in 2008 as it grew. It settled in its current location in the Meatpacking District in 2016, taking over a former industrial space.
The Fotografisk Center is devoted entirely to photography as an art form, which sets it apart from general art galleries. Exhibitions rotate throughout the year, showing work by both established and emerging photographers from Denmark and abroad.
The center has a bookstore focused on photography and digital darkroom facilities that visitors can use. Guided group tours of about 50 minutes are available and offer a good way to get into the current exhibitions.
The center recycles the materials used to build each exhibition, which is unusual among galleries of this type. This means that walls, panels and fittings are designed from the start to be reused after the show comes down.
