Den engelske Skole

Den engelske Skole is a school building in Nysted featuring early 20th-century Danish architecture with a separate annex called The Cottage situated nearby. The main structure and its outbuilding form a compact school complex located close to Nysted Nor.

The school was founded in 1919 by English educator Adah Mary Winifred Verey, who opened it in a former hospital building with 27 initial students. The building later served as a civil defense barracks, a camp school for disabled children, and eventually a rehabilitation center during different periods.

The school brought together young women from multiple countries who learned English, housekeeping, cooking, and nursing skills while living together on the campus. This international mix created a shared community experience that shaped how students understood different cultures.

The school complex is located close to Nysted Nor and is easily walkable when visiting the town center. The two connected buildings, the main structure and The Cottage, make for a pleasant stroll through this compact historical site.

The building had a fascinating second life after closing as a school, being repurposed for completely different functions over the years. These diverse uses demonstrate how structures can be adapted to meet changing community needs.
